Wines and Wineries

Vineyards

The Langa’s landscape is predominantly made up of vineyards. Straight rows of vineyards are meticulously distributed along country roads, village borders, hills and valleys. The very first word associated with the Langa territory is wine. The local cultivation of the grapevine dates back thousands of years and wines from this area have gained worldwide  prestige and notoriety over the years. During September and October, vineyards in the area take on a variety of colors: grapes become turgid and full,  farmers are busy harvesting the fruits of their labor.
It is Vendemmia time, a joyful and exciting  moment for everybody. Hills and vineyards are crowded with people, tractors and wine carts. Grapes are removed from the plant, laid in special baskets and carried to the winery.

Wineries and great wines

Le cantine di Calosso.

Every winery holds great wines. Barolo is the wine for the special occasions and for those who can appreciate the very best.  It is produced from the native Nebbiolo grape, a variety already known to the ancient Romans. In the 18th century, under King Carlo Alberto of Savoy, Barolo rose to  high levels of  quality, through special grape selection and cultivation. It is rightly defined as the King of Wines and the wine for Kings. Barolo is now considered one of the most prestigious wines in the world: those familiar with Barolo, defins this wine as a true masterpiece. Beside Barolo and Nebbiolo, a complex and elegant wine, Langa produces other great wines like Dolcetto, Barbera, Pelaverga ( a red with a lightly spicy abd pleasant bouquet). Other wines include fresh whites like Arneis and Favorita, and the sweet Moscato.

The winery is the special place where the transformation from grapes to wine occurs; the place where wine rests and matures away form light and temperature drops. Langa;s wineries are ample and spacious;  they are characterized by vaulted brick ceilings reminiscent of both ancient architecture and modern cathedrals. Visitors can sample the great wines of Langa in the tasting rooms along tge Barolo Route ( Strada del Barolo), in the famous regional enoteche, or in the municipal coop wineries, wine shops and farm-houses. Langa wines are very versatile; they are ideal for large parties as well as small groups. Their flowery and fruity aromas and their complex structure are unique expressions of a territory always well worth visiting.
